Linearisation: adjuncts and arguments
نویسندگان
چکیده
Kayne (1994) introduced a ‘Linear Correspondence Axiom’ which offered for the first time a principled theory concerning the linear PF ordering of NL phrases and words. Within this theory, adjuncts constitute an anomaly, requiring a stipulative definition of c-command. If the category labels of Categorial Grammar are used, a simpler linearisation depending on Asymmetric Merge is obtained, which applies without stipulation to adjuncts. The linearisation makes some distinct and desirable predictions.

Comprehending noun phrase arguments and adjuncts.
Two experiments investigated how readers comprehend noun phrase (NP) arguments and adjuncts. Previous research suggested that argument phrases are processed more quickly than adjunct phrases (Clifton, Speer, & Abney, 1991; Kennison, 1999; Schütze & Gibson, 1999; Speer & Clifton, 1998). The present experiments investigated whether the type of verb in the sentence context could influence how NP a...
متن کاملImplicit Adjuncts : The Cases of Degree Modifiers in Japanese and English
The issue of adjuncts has long been a neglected field of linguistic study whether it be syntactic or semantic. It is only in Pustejovsky (1995) that we find a brief mention of adjuncts. In addition to what the author calls true arguments, default arguments, and shadow arguments, he sets up a class of true adjuncts citing the following sentence , Mary drove down to New York on Tuesday. We will t...
متن کاملDerived Arguments
The distinction between arguments and adjuncts is fundamental to most linguistic theories, yet the distinction is not always clear. In addition to clear arguments and clear adjuncts, there are a number of unclear, in-between cases. These cases include passive agents, benefactives, directionals, and a number of other types of phrases. We argue that the in-between status of the unclear cases can ...
متن کاملHandling Dislocated and Discontinuous Constituents in Chinese Semantic Role Labeling
This paper discusses two outstanding issues, dislocated and discontinuous arguments, in the construction of the Penn Chinese PropBank, a corpus that has already been treebanked. It describes the verbspecific approach in our semantic role annotation in which arguments and adjuncts are treated differently in the sense that arguments are assigned labels that are interpretable only within the scope...
متن کاملThe Syntactic Algebra of Adjuncts
This paper gives a theory-neutral account of the Adjunct Island Constraint. I show that the island status of adjuncts is a consequence of two properties that set them apart from arguments: optionality and independence. Adjuncts can be omitted without affecting grammaticality as in (1), and if an utterance may contain adjunct a or adjunct b, then it may also contain both a and b, which is exempl...
